Structure

The BS RAC is made up of a General Assembly, an Executive Committee and Working Groups. The Working Groups have been set up to help the Executive Committee in its work. Observers are welcome to attend all BS RAC meetings.

The General Assembly
All members of the BS RAC are members of the General Assembly. Two thirds of the seats on the General Assembly comprise representatives of the fisheries sector, and one third consist of representatives of the other interest groups affected by the Common Fisheries Policy. The fisheries sector includes the catching sub-sector (ship owners, small-scale fishermen, employed fishermen and producer organisations), as well as processors, market organisations, and women’s networks. Other stakeholders represented are environmental NGOs, aquaculture producers, consumers, and recreational and sports fishermen.

The General Assembly meets once a year, or more often as required, to approve the overall strategy of the BS RAC and to oversee the work of the Executive Committee. Meetings of the General Assembly are open to the public.

The Executive Committee
The Executive Committee manages the work of the BS RAC and adopts its recommendations and suggestions on Baltic Sea fisheries. It consists of 24 members. Two thirds of the seats comprise representatives of the fisheries sector and one third representatives of the other interest groups affected by the Common Fisheries Policy.

The Executive Committee meets when needed, usually two or three times a year. Meetings of the General Assembly are open to the public, except in exceptional cases.

Working groups
The BS RAC has set up three advisory Working Groups to help the Executive Committee in its work to prepare advice: the Working Group on Demersal Fisheries, the Working Group on Pelagic Fisheries and the Working Group on Fisheries for salmon and sea trout. Each Working Group has a chair, but there is no fixed membership of the groups.
By having Working Groups, a wider range of people, including scientists, fishermen, environmental specialists, economists and others, can be involved in the BS RAC.

The work of the BS RAC is supported by a two person secretariat based in Copenhagen.
